Today’s schedule advertised a bus tour of Stewart. Everyone laughed about this because Steward only has 200 residents and is very small- what could a full day bus tour possible cover. When we boarded the bus, we learned that we would go first to visit the bears, continue to the Salmon Glacier, stop by the bears again upon return, stop for ice cream in town (where we could also see the whole town) and return to the campground.
On the first bear stop did not yield even a single sighting – guess they must not be hungry. At the Salmon Glacier, we met a local character who calls himself the “Bear Man”. This fellow used to be a teacher but now he spends three weeks at a time living in his small tent on the glacier searching for bears. He has learned a great deal of knowledge on both bears and glaciers and has shared this information on DVDs and books that he has for sale. Actually, the man was very interesting and Gary spent $11 on his latest book. The second bear visit was more profitable than the first – two very good sightings. Finally, the ice cream was wonderful – Tracks picked up the tab.
In the evening, we had our farewell dinner – prime rib or halibut at the King Edward Hotel in downtown Stewart. Marty ordered the prime rib – Gary ordered the halibut (probably reverse of what you might thing). After a discussion of the way the prime rib would be prepared (well done only), Marty traded here away for halibut with one of our tablemates. However, when the meals arrived, the prime rib was very rare to they traded back (does everyone understand this series of transactions?).
Following dinner, everyone returned to the campground for hugs, card exchanges and some tears before everyone retired to their RV for final packing. This marked the final activity of the caravan. In the morning, everyone was on their own – departure times and destinations were different for everyone.
