Heintzelman's Black Hills Vacation 2010 travel blog

Lewis and Clark Statue

I recieved orders to move to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. We decided to take a vacation to the Black Hills of South Dakota during our move. Minhee also wanted to take her mom and her aunt that she lived with while going to college in Oklahoma. So Minhee's mom flew to Oklahoma to meet Minhee's aunt while me and Minhee were driving from Ft. Drum to Ft. Leavenworth. Then the aunt and mom met us at Ft. Leavenworth to begin our vacation to the Black Hills.

Me and Minhee's drive from New York to Ft. Leavenworth was, for the most part, uneventful except for one incident. Minhee drove the car in front of me while I drove the truck with the portable cabin. We were just to the east of Cleveland on I-90 when it split into the Express Interstate and the regular Interstate. I didn't know if we could get to our exit off the express interstate or if I was allowed to drive on the express interstate with the trailer so I stayed in the middle lane of the regular interstate. Minhee, in the small maneuverable high performance car, decided to cut across two lanes of traffic and get into the express interstate entrance ramp less than 50 yards ahead while in rush hour traffic. Using the philosophy that "Hey, I'm bigger than the other people so they'll get out of my way", I threw the truck and camper across the two lanes of traffic with a "hell be damned" attitude. The look of fear and death in the faces of the drivers behind me, as I looked into the review mirror, will continue to haunt me to my grave.

We picked up Minhee's aunt and mother in Kansas City for the rest of our vacation. Our first stop on the trip was at Sioux City, Iowa. This was the place that SGT Floyd died of appendicitis. He was the only person on the Lewis and Clark Expedition that died. Sioux City has a SGT Floyd monument and like most towns along the Missouri River, has a small Lewis and Clark interpretive center.
