Larry and Debbie pulled out of the Pumpkin Patch about 10:15 this morning. As usual, we’re running about an hour behind them and left at 11:35. But it’s actually been working out quite well because Debbie texts me to give us a heads-up when there’s a traffic problem or road construction ahead – like today, there was a lot of bad and bumpy construction along Route 1A. We finally arrived at Timberland Acres RV Park at about 12:45pm.
The Goodmans had already left in their car to do some exploring when we arrived. We met our neighbor in the adjoining site, Bob, who is also traveling in a Monaco coach. He and his wife have spent a month or so in this park for the last three years, and he is very knowledgeable about the area. They also have a beautiful Irish setter named Seamus (pronounced "Shamus"), who reminds me of Baylee, not because of his looks, but because of his sweet temperament. Bob offered some suggestions for his favorite sights and places to eat. We took his advice for the best place to get lobster nearby – the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound – and were not disappointed. Well, I wasn’t anyway. I don’t think Dan was too disappointed, but we each ate a whole lobster and a dozen steamed clams, and though I managed to scarf mine down with no effort whatsoever, his tender arteries didn’t seem to appreciate the rich cholesterol overload, and he was feeling rather sluggish the rest of the day. He also thought that his lobster might have been a little undercooked because the tail was tough and he had a difficult time getting it out of the shell. All in all, though, it was a neat little place. You go inside and tell them what size lobster you want, then they open this big tank and there are hundreds of lobsters separated by size. They pick the lobsters out for you, and put them in a fishnet bag with a number on it, and that is your order number. Then they take them outside and cook them in the lobster pots outside over charcoal fires. When they’re done they call your number and you go inside and pick them up and take them to your table to eat. We had steamed clams while we waited for the lobster. I’m not a huge fan of clams, but these were delicious.
After we finished eating we drove into Bar Harbor to have a look around. It was another absolutely gorgeous day, and Bar Harbor is so pretty! We walked around a little and then went to the Eagle’s Nest, the outside bar at Stewman’s Lobster Pound, for a beer and a strawberry daiquiri (I had the daiquiri, in case you wondered). Then we walked by the Bar Harbor Inn and partway around the path around the harbor. We walked back into town and I went in a couple more shops and bought a souvenir sweatshirt, while Dan waited and people-watched on a bench outside.
When we got back to the campground, we shared our day’s experiences with the Goodmans over an adult beverage. Then Dan and I went to the Blueberry Hill Dairy Bar (again at Bob’s suggestion) for ice cream. I have been craving an ice cream cone for the last couple weeks. There are more ice cream stands up here in the northeast than I have ever seen anywhere. Then we went to Lowes so Dan could get some zip ties to make a temporary fix for the broken sunshade, and to Walmart for TP (I know, TMI)!
Tomorrow, if it doesn’t rain – Acadia National Park!
