On the Road Again travel blog

Eureka! Well, we are actually staying in Fortuna, 23 miles south of Eureka. Fortuna is nice but Eureka is awesome. We stopped in Loleta at a cheese factory and sampled some cheese. We watched them making cheddar cheese in great big vats. The cheese was great and the machinery was amazing. They had quite a store of local jams and jellies, preserves and spreads...we bought chese and jellies and strolled through some of the loveliest gardens I have seen. I took lots of pictues of flowers and plants. I'd love to live in a place where I could grow a garden like that. Then we walked over to main street, a cute little Vicorian downtown setting, to the bakery (there are lots of bakeries in northern Calif). I bought a heavy loaf of Russian rye...yum! Then we headed for Eureka and their historic district. We had lunch in a ornate Victorian cafe and searched through old book stores for antique books...didn't find any I HAD to have...went to the Clark Museum of antiques and history and bought fresh made bagels (more bread???). We then went to see the Carson Mansion (google it) and were awed at its ornate style and size...the most photographed Victorian house in American they say. The afternoon ended at the Sequoia Park Zoo...a very small zoo...very small...that had red pandas. They are fascinating creatures and I saw them for the first time at a zoo in Europe. Didn't even know they existed until then. Tomorrow we head for Ferndale...will try to download some pictures soon. I have some really beautiful ones.
