View across Biddeford Bay

Reminded us of Bigbury?

We took a leisurely drive along the coastal road starting at York passing through busy beach holiday resorts and past rocky headlands to Bideford Bay.

We have followed the coast up from Florida and have noticed the tides gradually increase in range from just a few inches in the south to around 20 feet here. That’s about the same as home but where we are headed, the Bay of Fundy in Canada, they have tides that rise around 50 feet – that’s the highest in the world.

So many of the views of the sandy bays here are very like what we would see at home, even the town names, Biddeford for example, lend an air of familiarity for us.

We came across the most beautiful church we have found. Impressive not for its size but its location and its architecture. St Ann’s Episcopal Church built in 1887 was constructed using large granite seawashed boulders that were gathered from the foreshore surrounding the church. If Fred Flinstone were to build a church in Boulder City, it would look like this! The theme continued inside the church and the use of heavy timber beams just enhanced the overall rustic feel. The church sits in well kept grounds overlooking the ocean and when the weather permits the services are moved to the outside chapel. This must be ‘the place of choice’ for weddings around here.
