I totally forgot to tell about my trip to San Simeon and the Hearst Castle....we went there while in Santa Margaria...it was a lovely trip over the mountains and along the coast. You can see the Hearst Castle a long way back from the road and it gives you a sense of its importance and artistry. You drive to a welcome center, full of expensive souvenirs, mediocre food, and a pretty nice, but glossed over, story about Hearst and his exploits. Then you pick up you tickets, if you ordered on-line as I did, and you have a set time to catch the tour bus for the ride to the house. It is a five mile, twisty road and they play a piped explanation of what you see as you assend to the top. The house and guest house are perched in such a way that you can see everything at once...breathtaking. Unfortunately, to see all of the estate, you must purchase tickets, separate tickets, for each of the FIVE tours. Yes, five, and each takes almost two hours. And inbetween, you have to ride down the mountain to catch the next bus up the mountain for your next tour....Who the heck made these plans???? Unfortunately, my mother thought that one tour was quite enough so we went on Tour 1. We saw one flour of one of the guest houses, the main floor of the main house, the Neptune pool and the indoor pool---AMAZING.....and some of the grounds. Tour two would have taken us into one of the other guest houses and the other floors of the main house....I really wanted to take that one....another trip maybe....If I can every find the time to post my pictures I will share some of these wonders with you....Today I am in Fortuna, California....we had a lovely drive through the redwoods today...will catch you up tomorrow. Adios
