Can you see our wake weaving past the lobster pots?

Casco Bay routes

Casco Bay contains a chain of islands many of which are inhabited and if you need something delivered it arrives on the mailboat from Portland. We took a trip on the mailboat on its rounds of a few of these islands and it was far better than the usual tourist trip around the bay. Fascinating to see the boat arrive with deliveries which the islanders would load into the back of the waiting cars and pickups, swap delivery mailbags for collection mailbags, unload a few passengers and their dogs and then cast off for the next island. Great way to catch a glimpse of the islands and surrounding coast.

Maine Lobsters are big business here – there are lobster shacks and seafood restaurants everywhere, real big business. But I was still surprised by the sheer volume of lobster pots in the water during our trip. Our captain had to continually swerve and turn to avoid the thousands of pots laid everywhere, even in the main channels. I just cannot imagine how they can be avoided at night or when its foggy, what a nightmare for small boats.
