At National Battlefield

Downtown Charlottesville

Nature walk at Campsite

Slept well! It is hard to say how much that means.

After breakfast, I leave camp, driving north towards Charlottesville, Virginia. This was not in my itinerary, but I want to see Monticello, so added it. On the way, I stop at Petersburg to see the National Battlefield. Virginia is a beautifully green state, especially at this time of year, and the hills are low and rolling, a difficult place to contemplate the battle for Petersburg which went on for 9 ½ months. I take pictures of cannons, listen to battle strategies, note the "slight depression" where a home was destroyed, see the clothes and letters from Union and Confederates soldiers, and am sad, yet again. According to some presentation, and as far as I know, there is no provision in the constitution for seceding.

Continuing through the green of the hills and the many forested areas, I arrive in Charlottesville mid-afternoon, check in at the KOA camp—another nice one—but before plugging in, I go to the ticket office, to be ready for tomorrow and then to the "historic downtown" which is seven blocks of brick pavers and a walking mall. Ice cream, a stop at a yoga studio, as I want to take a class tomorrow and I'm headed back to the campground for a walk on the nature trail that passes a pond. Probably takes ten minutes, not enough, so I walk around the campground for awhile.

There is so much that is historical in Virginia, I could spend months, but will hit the highlights only.
