As we made the long journey across Guatemala and Honduras to the Bay Islands we were so excited to get back to the Caribbean. Luckily this time mother nature was on our side and promised us sunny skies for the week ahead. Utila in the Bay Islands was one of the places we had both being looking forward to for so long. Along with being a beautiful island in the Caribbean it was the place we would both do our Open Water 1 Dive Courses.
We chose Altons Dive Centre, its one of the most popular on the island and I am not surprised. Our room was literally on the water, the staff were great and the vibe was the best we had experience this far on our trip.
It is fair to say that there were a few nerves when we began learning all the skills that go along with diving. Dam that taking your mask off under water task!! Luckily the World Cup Final broke up our long day. This gave T a chance to convince herself that she can actually do this and that water in the nose isn't the end of the world. All of Honduras was really World Cup and South Africa crazy, it was awesome to see huge South African flags put up outside many bars and restaurants.
After we finished up the skills and we moved into the deeper water the diving became great fun. T was lucky enough to be my buddy on the dives so other than a few unexpected warm currents we managed to check out some awesome fish and coral under the superb guidance of Katja our instructor and Rich our dive master. Once you have spent a few days at Altons most people there became your mate and there were constant laughs and jokes being had either on the boat (where tunes are played non stop) or at the snack shack/bar. There were always a few people who were keen on a few beers in the evening and Utila never failed so show us a great time.
Its not just a sales pitch when the dive instructors say Utila has a way of keeping you there. This was definitely an amazing highlight for us both and it was the first time we were really truly sad to leave a place. We were however lucky enough to take the Altons dive boat back onto the mainland of La Ceiba as opposed to the very early morning public ferry and thoroughly enjoyed the 80 minute trip in the open sea air...a few dolphins even came to say goodbye.
Great friends made and a fantastic time had by all and well done T and Weebs on becoming underwater breathers!!!
