We took a 2 hour trip for $2 by bus to Mindo, in the cloud forest. We went to a funny little lodge with a focus on bird watching. They served all meals. We were the only guests and had a very interesting challenge trying to converse. They had a dozen hummingbird feeders and at least that many species coming right up to the balcony to feed. There were also beautiful tanagers, finches, as well as a possum and monkeys at night. We did a pre dawn walk to see cock of the rock. They are an interesting bird where the males come out at 6 am every morning all year long to try to find a mate. There were 3 there for about an hour as it was getting light. We had a beautiful walk to a waterfalls. We also went to the local towns to people watch, and sample the local organic coffee and chocolate. We had the first rain in 3 weeks, but not a surprise in the cloud forest. We have had cool weather, and have needed a jacket most mornings and evenings.
We took a bus back to Quito, then a flight to Lima last night. We are at a great bed and breakfast that our friend Violeta recommended a block from the beach. We are hoping to see her friend today. We have another day here tomorrow before we fly home.
