There is a small island off the coast called Isla del Sol that you can catch a boat out to and we were told that it was worth a visit.
Tash, James & I decided not to take the 1 hour boat out to the island but opted for the 17km hike through these tiny villages to a point where you can hire a guy and a row boat to take you across. The hike was really nice and well worth it, but we ended up paying more for the 2km row boat that we would have for the 15km ferry ride.
We negotiated a price with the boat owner to row us across and the four of us jumped in and headed off. When we got to the island, he tried to dump us out on the Southern tip of the island. We told him that we wanted to go to the point closes to the accomodation, and he replied "well thats another 30 Bolivianos. You told me you wanted to go to the island" so we argued and lost and we were too tight to pay him the extra so we walked the couple of Kms from where he dumped us to where the village is.
Isla del Sol is a tiny little island and is really beautiful. We stayed in a small hotel/family home ate lake trout and relaxed for a few days.
We managed to find the energy to take a hike to the north part of the island which was beautiful. When you are around the water of the lake you forget that you are at altitude and soon realise that hiking at 4200m is harder than you expect. The hills seem to take forever and you feel like taking a rest after about 15 steps. We stopped at a beautiful bay on the East side of the island and relaxed for a bit, then convinced a local guy to rent us his row boat for an hour or two ($1) and we rowed out into the lake and up the coast a bit more. It was a great day and really beautiful. I will try and add some photos soon.
It was tough to leave the lake, but we were off to see more of Bolivia.
