Buena Vista Colorado to Amarillo Texas

465 miles (total trip miles 5,248)

Today we had a late start at 10:30, I took apart the wheel bearings, cleaned and greased them, everything is ok, we have new tires and the wheel bearings are ok.

We take Route 24 south and just outside of town we pick up Route 285 south, in Poncha Springs we pick up Route 50 east. This road follows the Arkansas River, what a beautiful road this is as it follows the river and occasionally goes through canyons. In Texas Creek we take Route 69 south which is another nice road but the mountains are quickly disappearing and the terrain turns to flat dry farm country. We take Route 25 south into New Mexico then pick up Route 64/87 east.

Laura tells me I must find good things in all states but this is difficult in the northeast part of New Mexico, it’s flat and dry. After being visually stimulated for 3 weeks this will be difficult to find anything good here. What I did find is the trains are really long and full of graffiti. The person that tagged them did a good job, someone should hire him/her to be an artist.

We drive into Texas and it’s more of the same, I can see cars miles in front of me, I have at least 15 minutes after I see them before I pass them. Suddenly they add a corner and we start to climb hills, I get excited. In 1 mile we climbed 10 feet in elevation, that was the best part of Texas so far.

We tried to get a room in Amarillo but it’s a zoo, everything is booked so we drove about 20 miles out of town, not many hotels, I’m tired and can’t see well so we have to settle for this pit hole we get.

All is well on the road except for this hotel, it;s 12:30 and I;m tired
