Today we had breakfast with two other families, both from Wisconsin. Pam didn't really care for the crepes, but I thought they were okay. She did enjoy the fruit and yogurt.
Today we drove a short distance to the shores of Lake Superior. We first went to Gooseberry Falls State Park. I always remember my dad talking about going to this place when we came to visit my uncle Ellis and his family in the early 70s. He thought the name was funny. We walked around the visitors center some and then decided that the best strategy for riding bikes was to drive up to the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and ride down to Gooseberry Falls and then ride back (no shuttle service available today).
The Gitchi-Gami Trail will someday go from Two Harbors all the way up the coast to Grand Marais, but for now the longest section is 14 miles from Beaver Bay to Gooseberry Falls. Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is eight miles from Gooseberry Falls.
We had expected that this would be our coolest day since we were close to Lake Superior, but it actually turned out to be our warmest. We had about four fairly steep hills to conquer both going and coming back. We made several stops along the way and drank plenty of water. Overall it was a great trip with lots of views of the lake. When we got back to Split Rock, we decided that riding to Beaver Bay would be redundant and after three straight days of riding our legs were turning to rubber anyway. So we called it a day.
Tonight we ate at a restaurant called Blackwoods. It was delicious, prices were reasonable, and the service was excellent. We would highly recommend this establishment to anyone in the area. However, avoid Dixie's . . . this is a whole other story I won't go into right now.
After dinner we went down by the shoreline in Two Harbors and did some walking to burn off some calories. Now we are back at our B&B.
Tomorrow we will head back to Illinois. I'm not sure if we will drive all the way or stop along the way. I need to get back to St. Clair before Thursday because I will be going to a pre-retirement seminar in St. Louis.
If I don't get another entry, I hope you have enjoyed reading about our adventures (and sometimes misadventures) in Northern Minnesota.
