Ellen's Asia and New Zealand Trip 2010 travel blog

Nicky and I left the Coromandel yesterday morning and joined the next Magic Bus into Thames headed to Rotoura.

En route the bus stopped at various places including Matmata (or Hobbiton - where the Hobbit is being filmed) and next to a giant L&P Bottle.

In the evening we went to a Maori Cultural performance, with singing, dancing and a traditional Hangi dinner. The Hangi is cooked underground and tasted delicious (or it could have been purely as it was a proper meal!). They even had custard as a dessert! At one point in the evening we could wander round a replica village which was quite eerie as the trees were all lit up and you could here music playing.

Today we went for a wander round Rotoura town and through a field of Thermal pools - some of boiling mud and some boiling water. They're pretty much everywhere in town and stink of sulpher (aka rotten eggs). In some parts of town you can only smell it a little bit... in others it stinks!!

In evening we went to the Hells Gate Mud Baths - very messy!! And smelly too :( Everything smelt of egg afterwards! Good fun though.
