The Indiana Trooper who showed up got out of his car and put out 3 flares about 30 yards behind the camper. Then he came to us and saw the tire. We told him help was on the way. He told us Indiana had a state sponsored Disabled Vehicles program and a van may be coming to help us too. Didn't really understand what he meant so we just smiled and nodded. :-)
He gave us the name of a tire place we could stop at to replace our spare. It would be about 30 minutes West. We thanked him for the information and I went back to my impossible nuts.
Five minutes later, the State Sponsored Van pulled up in the lanes over a cement barrier to our right. The operator, JC, came up to me and Karen and assessed our situation. Stepped back to his van and came back with a cross lug nut wrench for me to use (looks like a 'plus' sign). I tried two of the four sizes and found the one I needed on the third try.
With JC coaching, and my knowledge of changing a tire, I successfully, and safely (as safe as can be in the breakdown lane of a highway) changed the tire. The Trooper had left. I returned the lug wrench to JC, and he left. Then I called the 'Good Sam ERS' and cancelled the assistance on its way.
Then off we go, to continue our journey to San Francisco. Now a little over an hour later.
