We may not have driven far today but we are certainly in a completely new world. From the cool gray fog of the coast we have arrived in the bright sunny heat of the desert. Today was a relatively "cool" 103 degrees. Even with the heat the area is quite beautiful. The mountains provide a very dramatic backdrop for the cultivated desert scape of the inhabited areas. The orange and purple flowers make a lovely contrast to the palms and cacti.
We are staying with my aunt of nearly 93 years, having a wonderful time catching up on family news. This evening we spent several pleasant hours chatting on her porch, the temperature absolutely perfect.
Our last day in California will always be a memorable one for we have now had the full southern California experience. Sitting in the living room the world started shaking and rolling. I hung onto Benjamin, Abigail attempted to remain standing in the shower and my aunt calmly said, "well that's a big one". The TV news reported a 5.9 quake about 20 to 30 miles from our location. Apparently each quake has a different feeling and this one provided much more of an "experience" than the much larger one this spring.
Perhaps it is time to be getting back to Indiana...
