We're here...we made it....and we are exhausted! This leg of our journey was supposed to take 8-9 hours, and it ended up taking over 12 hours.
We had a nice breakfast this morning in Nashville and got on the road at 8:30 a.m. We left during rush hour, which was no worse than I-4 in Orlando. The sky was clear and blue. From Tennesse, we crossed the state line and drove a short time through West Kentucky and then a short time through Illinois. Lots of corn fields and farms in Kentucky.
Mom and I thought it would be nice to have a picnic lunch, so we ordered take-out from Cracker Barrell (a gift from work friends-thank you!) and stopped at a rest stop in Illinois and enjoyed lunch on a picnic table. Mom had a fish sandwich and I had a chef salad.
Unfortunately, as we left Illinois and drove into Missouri toward St. Louis, it started, raining and it didn't stop. There was also an hour road delay due to a lane closure. As we got closer to St. Louis, we passed several car accidents, which slowed traffic down considerably. Fortunately, the accidents all seemed to be fender benders and no serious injuries. As we approached downtown St. Louis, we remembered that the city is famous for the landmark-Gateway Arch. The arch represents the western expansion of the United States. We did not get to tour the arch or the riverfront as we were only driving through the city (at rush hour, of course). However, we did drive close enough for Mom to take some great pictures. It really is an amazing monument.
From St. Louis, we passed two more car accidents. It rained practically the whole way from St. Louis to Kansas City, which slowed traffic down. We finally arrived at the hotel in Kansas City at 9:00 p.m. The hotel is nice and clean with an indoor swimming pool, so we will take a dip tomorrow morning before we leave. It should be a short day tomorrow-about 5-1/2 hours.
