Home, sweet home. It's amazing how connected we get to our home and how disconcerted we get when it changes. We finalized the sale of our house in Topeka on June 30, after several months of organizing and pitching. And yet when the movers came, we weren't ready. It was three days that I'd rather forget, down to the last "since the movers won't take it, should we take the olive oil or pitch it?".....multiply that by hundreds of similar decisions during those three days. And when all was said and done, the movers took too much and we took too much to the travel trailer. How did we get so much stuff??? Thank goodness for daughter Jenni who stuck with us from morning to night, cleaning and packing!
The first night in the TT was June 29 (the day the bed left the Topeka house) and it was a nightmare. We were dog tired. We had a pizza delivered to the TT (such a nice feature of the campground!), said goodbye to Jenni, and settled in for the night. The first thing we heard was a train whistle and you could swear that the train had to be running between our trailer and the next one! And then another train, and another train, and so on until about 3 a.m. But add to that two cats who were - to put it mildly - nuts. They ran around, they hissed, they fought, they walked on our bed, they jumped up and down. There is a space between the bathroom door and the bedroom, so we put them in the main part of the trailer and stuffed pillows under the door so they couldn't get into the bedroom. They cried and pushed and got the pillows moved. This scene went on at least three times until we gave up on the pillows. I think all total we maybe slept an hour.
The next night, John rigged up something to block the door that the cats couldn't get in as easily.. So they sat outside our bedroom door and cried pitifully for hours. Finally I got up and then John and we both held them and rocked them. About four hours sleep that night.
Last night we rearranged things so that they had access to the bathroom (where Ole had made a nest in the cupboard). It was better, but at 2 a.m. he started crying again and wouldn't stop. Lena was curled up in her bed, but Ole couldn't settle down. I rocked him for an hour, then went back to bed and left the bedroom door open. John says the cat jumped up and woke him up about 5:00.
The people are tired, the cats are crazy and the trailer seems so small. There is just no way to make 240 sq. ft. seem spacious! But today is another day, and maybe I can organize things a bit better and we can all settle down.
