Teater Summer Vacation 2010 travel blog

Left the KOA first thing in the morning and headed for my aunt and uncle’s house in Georgia. Since we came so far to see the Smokey Mountains, we decided to take a slightly longer route through the park. It was crowded…..but towards the end of the park, we found a parking spot by a trail, so we decided to take another hike.

Kids didn’t exactly jump for joy…..but they hiked uphill for over a mile and a half before we turned around and headed back. There were four bridges that crossed over the river….the first consisted of two logs (about 30-inches wide) and the next three bridges were only a single log and each progressively narrower (the last had points less than 12-inches wide. Kids didn’t have a problem……logs look old so I was a bit concerned I might be the one to break the bridge……a lot of shaking 10-feet above the river….but never did break.

While we never did see a black bear…..we did see get to see nature in action. Girls were fascinated with these yellow butterflies that seemed to love horse poop. Then we saw one of the yellow butterflies down by the river and what looked like a snake sneaking up on it……however it turned out the snake was really a large salamander that jumped out and inhaled the butterfly……..Elli was crushed…..Lilli just told her it was the circle of life (Lion King).

Coming out of the park….we had the GPS detour…..GPS indicated we were on the main highway…..but the scenery indicated no such thing……we were climbing a cliff on a road that wasn’t anywhere near two lanes wide…..at one point in order to not run over oncoming traffic I had to drive through someone’s landscaping in North Carolina……we were really in the middle of nowhere……kept waiting for the banjos to start playing.

Eventually we found civilization……and my Aunt and Uncles house. There was some question as to whether or not the motor home would go in their driveway…….narrow and very steep downhill to the house. After looking it over….decided to give it a try……however, no one else in my family wanted to ride down the hill with me……so the rest of my family walked down the driveway. Ended up making it….the turnaround took awhile ……a lot of back and forth…..couldn’t go real far before the back end would drag or the front end would be up against some obstacle.
