Ok… History 101…What’s the significance of “Plymouth Rock”? If you said that it marks the place where the pilgrims first landed, you are partially right!
After a difficult sailing passage on the “Mayflower II” from England to the New World (America), the Pilgrims sailed into Cape Cod Bay and finally made land first at Provincetown, MA., where they remained for 5 weeks exploring the region, before sailing on to Plymouth, Massachusetts. It is said that this landing is marked by a rock that everyone stepped on to when coming ashore. Whether this is true or just a story, “Plymouth Rock” was preserved over the ages. Today, what little is left of it, is preserved in a beautiful Neo-Classical Revival style Portico representing the Pilgrim’s credo of PERMANENCE, STABILITY and STRENGTH.
Walking along the waterfront, we stopped to see a replica of the “Mayflower II”. It is difficult to imagine that this ship could sail those long distances from Europe to America. It didn’t look too durable to me. But then, what do I know, I’m not an expert on ships! (carol)
