A couple of early morning boat trips and we arrvied on the Island at around 11 am - where we were free until 6:30pm. The Island is one of 3 in the park thats owned jointly by Malaysia and the Phillipines. They exist to enusre the survival of the sea turtle by moving the eggs once they've been laid and moving them to a safer place away from predators.
I hired some snorkelling gear and went snorkelling for a couple of hours off the beach. The water was lovely and clear and I got some good fishy photos.
The evening was better though. After dinner we had to wait in the restaurant for the turtles to start nesting - to cut a long story short we were split into 2 groups A and B. A would get the first turtle that nests in a good spot and B the second... group B couldn't go until gone midnight. Worth the wait though (even if a couple of American blokes moaned the whole time about the wait - it's hardly the Park Rangers fault, funniest thing was they gave up and went back to their room 5 minutes before we got to see the turtle).
We first watched them release some baby hatchlings into the sea - soooo adorable! Although seeing as most of the 90 we saw released are probably dead by now you felt quite guilty about it too. That was meant to be the last part but they did it first as it was getting late!
We then got the call and went to watch the turtle lay her eggs. She just sat there in a trance laying away - over 70 eggs came out. Was amazing to watch. Then the ranger moved them to a hatchery where they will be safe from predators.
