We reached Puerto Escondido after a long and windy van journey through the mountains, at times we were driving higher than the clouds which was just surreal. We stayed on Zicatela beach at an amazing hostel called Buena Onda. Zicatela was quite far out of the town but had loads of backpackers there so we didn't really have to leave our cabañas. The beach is really long and beautiful, but the waves were so high that we couldn't go deeper than ankle depth without getting knocked over! Luckily the rain has been holding out until the evenings so we had a few good days sunbathing. Been keeping up with the world cup and watched the England match in a cabaña on the beach, a bit different to a pub in London! Unfortunately only Brits were staying there so there were no yanks to abuse. We also went to Carizalillo beach which was a lot smaller but better for swimming and surfing. I tried t get one of the guys we were staying with to teach me how to surf but I was pretty unsuccessful, will hopefully be able improve by the end of the trip!
