Our first stop on our trip was to Oaxaca (pronounced like Wahaca) in the south of Mexico. We had heard that it's one of the most beautiful towns in the country and bohemian with lots of markets and craft shops. The town itself is really small, but the streets are filled with stalls and people selling things so there's lots of people around. The undercover markets were really nice, with lots of different types of food and handmade crafts. The area is famous for its mole and style of hot chocolate and these are sold everywhere. The only down side was there was a big protest in the main square about education, so there loads of tents and people camping out. This became a bit annoying at night as they put up a picket line round the main square and we couldn't go in to buy some food, the protest seemed really bad for the restaurants and tourism in general in the area.
The bars in Oaxaca are really cute and chilled out, but seemed to close so early! I don't know if it was because we were here during the week, but we were back at the hostel early most nights after being the last ones to leave a bar, it seemed really strange that in a town with lots of travellers passing through that it was so sleepy! Hopefully Puerto Escondido will be a bit more lively! Our last morning I got up really early to watch the opening game of the World Cup, Mexico v South Africa... dedication.
