NORAD entrance from our campsite. Betty is thinking about launching a missile.

Sunday, June 06, 2010. Another brief drive of 100 miles north on I-25 to Cheyenne Mountain State Park (6500’) near Colorado Springs. We left Lathrop State Park this morning which is Colorado’s first state park and are now at Colorado’s newest state park. We have a great site, #39, which overlooks the outskirts of Colorado Springs 800’ below, and behind us is Cheyenne Mountain, the home of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). This command was established in the 60’s to defend against nuclear attack from the Russians. The complex is built deep within the mountain and designed to survive a direct nuclear strike. We are not allowed to drive the NORAD Road but in a photo taken from our campsite I believe we can see where the entrance is on the mountain.

We like campsite #39 so we checked to see when we might be able to get it again. It will next be available on August 8. That gives you an idea of how popular this park is.
