2010 Heading north - Scandinavia & the Baltics travel blog

Arrived back in Oslo this morning at around 6:30am. Our overnight train ride had been quite comfortable in our sleeper. After grabbing a cup of coffee we decided we would see if we could get a very early check in at our hotel. It was the same one we used last time and we had left most of our luggage there. No problem getting in to our room, and we even went down for the breakfast!

After breakfast we caught up with a bit of our washing and other mundane tasks and then decided to catch the underground out to Vigeland Sculpture Park. We had read a bit about this park so thought we should check it out.

The park covers 80 acres and features 212 bronze and granite sculptures created by Gustav Vigeland. Vigeland personally sculpted every figure out of clay and individual craftsmen were contracted to fabricate the pieces into what they are today. These works of art reside along an 850 meter-long axis divided into six sections: The Main Gate, The Bridge, The Children’s Playground, The Fountain, The Monolith Plateau and the Wheel of Life.

The park was quite interesting, but what amazed me was the number of people there. There were bus loads of tourists going through the place. After looking at the sculptures we moved to a quieter part of the park. This was where the locals were, walking their dogs, jogging or having a bbq. Small disposable bbq's are very popular here and throughout the park you can the small dead patches of grass that has been burnt by the bbq's.

I think the uni holidays must have started because you see a lots of groups of young people, kicking around the football, having their bbq's or just hanging out with friends. We spent a bit of time enjoying the fresh air and sun and then decided to walk back to town through the residential suburbs.
