Welcome to Oslo

One more bus this morning. This time it was a three hour ride to Oslo. The border crossing into Norway was quite relaxed. A customs man came on board and had a casual conversation with each person. Interestingly Norway is not part of the EU, although it does have membership of the European Economic area. It seems each political party has a different view on whether they should be part of the EU.

After arriving at the central bus station we walked the short distance to the train station to pick up some tickets we had preordered, and then walked to our hotel which is located quite close to the centre. Then we headed out to have a look around.

We were about to look for somewhere to have lunch when we came across a number of stalls set up. It was some kind of food promotion and they were giving away food! We lined up at the various counters and got to try various sausages and proscuitto, chicken and other meat, also some soup. After going around a couple of times we had had lunch!

Norway has a reputation for being one of the most expensive countries, and Oslo is one of their most expensive cities, so the free lunch was most welcome. From here we just had a walk around town, also visited one of the large churches. The centre of town is a pedestrian only area and has a very good feel about it. There are plenty of outdoor cafes and people were making good use of the sunshine today.
