We drove to Mannheim from Maastricht with Ben and we quickly found that we were in Mannheim for the people as there is not too much to see. They do have a beautiful water tower though with a huge garden and lawn around it. We found out, however, that you are not able to sit on the grass though. It was a strange concept for us knowing that we can pound drinks in the streets but heaven forbid we sit on the grass to take in the scenery.
Kyle let us take over his res room for 3 nights with him. We are so grateful for his generosity and had a great time visiting!
The next day we were able to take the 20minute train to Heidelburg which was gorgeous. It was similar to Bruges and Edinburgh with the cobblestone everywhere and the castle on the hill. We walked our hearts out this day wandering through the streets and up the hundreds of steps to the castle. When we made it to the castle grounds we spent the afternoon people watching and chatting in the sun. I know this scenario of us just sitting and chatting is becoming a trend but it is the best and is where some of my favourite memories from this trip have occurred.
Back in Mannheim we were able to visit with more of my friends from school Ian, Laura, Annie, etc., so nice to see them although I do feel a little guilty that they are stressing over case studies and papers while we tell them we had a ridiculous round of Crazy 8 countdown at dinner.
We had another quiet day of shopping and playing cards in the park the next day.
Mannheim was an amazing opportunity to visit with friends from home and we have enjoyed the slower travel pace compared to what we were used to before. It has given us some much needed energy to push through to the next leg of the journey: Berlin – Prague – Munich – Vienna – Budapest!
