The Southern Belle

The Bellingrath Home's Courtyard

We stayed in Mobile last night at Shady Acres RV Park. After breakfast, we got it all together and took off for Theodore and Bellingrath Gardens. I'd heard about it so often from June, and here we were close with a chance to see it ourselves.

It seems we missed most of the azaleas in bloom. We did see a row of white ones, and they were still pretty. The hanging baskets and other container gardens were gorgeous. We enjoyed the rose garden, but it wasn't spectacular.

What used to be the six-car garage now is home to Bessie Mae Morse Bellingrath's porcelain collection. It's wonderful. So many figurines. She also had many sets of porcelain dinnerware -- a color for every holiday.

We boarded the Southern Belle for a ride on the Fowl River. The captain was very knowledgeable about history of the area and the Bellingrath Estate. I found the history of the Taensa and Maubillia Indians the most interesting.

We toured the 15-room home; it housed more of Bessie Mae's porcelain collection. The bedrooms and bathrooms were beautiful. We were amazed to see how the mahogany dining room chairs and the furniture on a sun porch had faded to almost blond. The link is to the history of Bellingrath.

We had lunch in the RV, and left for Hattiesburg.
