The G.R.I.T. crew for the week.

Gene, Cyndy, and Aunt Cheryl volunteered for the True GRIT program cleaning up graffiti off of rocks and canyon walls on May 3rd through the 7th in Glen Canyon National Recreational Area on Lake Powell. This is a wonderful program which involves cleaning graffiti, picking up litter, handing out literature and talking to people to let them know about this program. One of the best things about the program is the people you meet, the other volunteers and park rangers that you work with! It does not hurt that it takes place on Lake Powell on a 55 foot houseboat to get you there, which also is your home from Monday through Friday. There is a chase boat so that you can go around the lake scouting for graffiti and getting you to the places that need to be cleaned. Gene acts as the pilot/captain and always does an amazing job and Cyndy usually acts as his first mate to help him out when needed. On this trip Gene was training Valerie(a park ranger) to be a new captain and so she was acting as first mate. The crew consisted of Gene, Cyndy, Valerie, Cheryl, Pat, Cindy, and Sandy. Gene was soooo lucky to have all women on board as volunteers. WE all did an awesome job and worked very hard to get the canyon back to it's natural form...........graffiti can be carved, charcoal, painted on any way that defaces the rock or canyon. It is a nice way to give back to a program that gives so much to so many, the National Park Service! Lake Powell is beautiful and is a great place to enjoy nature with it's many canyons, a must for anyone to see.
