Fiesta in Action

I thought Lima was going to be a grimy, poverty ridden city that I was going to be glad to get the hell out of...but I am actually enjoying it. Staying in Gringo land...Miraflores is a cross between St Heliers and Remeura. We are near the waterfront which is a grey strip of sea and cliffs. People were running along the waterfront this morning and doing tai chi. This morning I went with one of my amigo yellow taxi drivers to Centra Lima. Lots of lovely churches, heaps of signs and Latino cafes. I loved it but still managed to get lost and had to get a taxi to a church that turned out was only around the corner. There was some sort of celebration for one of the saints at one of the churches which most of the photos are of. I haven't got to the bottom of which of the saints we were celebrating. The fiesta drewn a big crowd with lots of people dancing in costumes and fireworks being let off. Most people were there to have fun. But on the outskirts of the crowd you could see people with desperation in their eyes. I am sure were hanging around to see if there was an opportunity to pick a pocket or two. You cant blame them but that sort of desperation is pretty grim. Not that I am becoming street savy I am still a naive kiwi! This afternoon we had our first Intrepid group meeting. I think God is trying to test me en Latino America...because all of the group apart from two of us are married couples. 90% of the "marrieds" were in their 20s and said they had only just got married and this trip was like a honeymoon for them. The other couple said they had been married for 45 years....Groan!! Laura is my lucky room mate, she is in her 20s or early 30s and she was very disappointed that she is on a honeymoon trip and glad she is leaving before we get to Bolivia. Maybe I will have more time for blogging than I thought!!!
