Old Sow Whirlpool

Old Sow Whirlpool

Deer Island – Weather is holding, clear and cool and breezy. Drove around island to Park / Ferry Landing (to Campobello and Eastport, ME – not operating). Looked for birds (eider ducks and black guillemots!) and watched tidal whirlpool – “Old Sow”. Old Sow is best three hours before high tide. Also, it is best with the maximum 28 foot tide. Today’s tide was only 18 feet, about minimum. Old Sow was much more beautiful than watching paint dry, but nowhere near as impressive as the painting on the fallen over sign. Saw seals and porpoise feeding around Old Sow, also bald eagle and seabirds. Tourist season at Deer Island, and apparently much of New Brunswick, doesn’t open until about June 15. We were the only camping rig on the island.

Took the ferry back to L’Etete.

Drove to Blacks Harbor for ferry to Grand Manan Island.

Camped at Hole In The Wall Park ($30). Walked down hill to village – ate mussels, salt fish cakes & summer salad at Sailor’s Landing. Walked back uphill, out to Swallow Tail lighthouse, downhill to road, uphill to HITW. Ron explored parts of HITW park – 300 acres with Pulse accessible sites very close to the cliffs where they say you might be awakened by whales blowing later in the season. It stays light late and takes very long to get really dark.
