Our Europe Trip - May 2010 travel blog

We arrived in Paris this morning right on time. Neither one of us slept very well. The train is noisy and made 5 or 6 stops during the night. We were able to eat what they called a 5 star breakfast which consisted of a mini croissant, a mini chocolate croissant, a piece of what we call texas toast, 1 grape, 1 slice of orange and 2 slices of kiwi, along with marmalade and butter. Coffee and orange juice was also included.

We met Marie-Claude at the end of the platform when we arrived. Phillipe was waiting in the car for us, illegally parked! They took us to have coffee at a cute café in Paris, where we were able to talk and get to know each other some. After coffee, Phillipe drove around and showed us the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and the Musee du Louvre. We just drove around to these sites and hope to have the time later in the trip to visit them all.

Phillipe and Marie-Claude then took us to another train station in Paris for our journey to Amiens. We are riding 1st class in a very nice train.

We arrived in Amiens around 2:30 pm and found our hotel fairly easy. Checked in and asked about a laundry mat and walked about a mile and found that. Will attempt to do some laundry on Friday.

We then set out to explore Amiens, a beautiful city in France. Walked around for awhile, found a place that looked good and decided to have a beer. The brand was , Jeff had Grimbergen Dubbel and I had a Grimbergen Blond. Good tasting beer!!

The French do not eat until late (around 8 or 8:30 pm), but it has been a long day and we really wanted to get something to eat. Finally found a place about 7 pm that would serve us, a pub called Brussels. We had a very good meal and enjoyed another beer!

It is really surreal being in a country that you cannot speak the language. This town that we are in now, there are not a lot of folks that speak English and we should have learned some more of the language. Dinner was a prime example…no one in the restaurant spoke English and our waitress felt badly because she could not understand us, so we just ordered the house special and it was good. She understood thumbs up and that’s how we communicated!
