“I’LL LET THE TWO COLONISTS IN”

Continuing up the north Cornwall coast we stopped at Boscastle which has a most interesting “Witchcraft Museum.” Witchcraft is alive and well in these parts; unfortunately I didn’t realize the date—May 1st/Beltane—or I might have been tempted to inquire about festivities. The charming village is situated along a narrow river gorge; in 2004 a flash flood washed away a hundred cars and damaged many of Boscastle’s oldest buildings. We “carried on” as they say in England and came to the towns of Lynton and Lynmouth; Lynton at the top of the rocky cliffs and Lynmouth the harbor town at the mouth of the River Lyn (of course!). An ingenious funicular railway was constructed in 1890 and has been running ever since. Two cars move by water being taken into or released from a holding tank; when the car at the top has received its passengers, the car at the bottom releases water, lightening it to move up while the top car moves down. After walking down the cliff from Lynton to Lynmouth we wanted to take the car up but were right behind the cutoff of the line of passengers. The conductor motioned us on saying, “I’ll let the two colonists in, they’ve come back for retraining.” We laughed all the way up.
