Hi Everyone!
We left Hilton Head on Friday, May 14. That morning we took a brief ride into the Sea Pines Plantation (gated communities are called plantations), which was filled with very large yachts in the harbor. After about 3 hours of driving, we were in Bishopville, South Carolina. There, we saw topiary done by a private homeowner. It was amazing! Every plant, bush and tree on his property (and some on the neighboring properties) was perfectly manicured in beautiful shapes. Wait until you see the pictures! One of my car tires had a slow leak and our Evergreen hosts helped us out with air and referred us to their mechanic, where we had it repaired the next morning.
From South Carolina, we had a loooong trip to Richmond, Virginia. We did manage to catch part of the last tour of the capital...very impressive, like a small Washington, D.C. We also saw Governor McDonnell's house. Seems he was having a party since many people were arriving all dressed up. We were thinking of climbing the wall and crashing the party, but, well...two old ladies scaling the wall of the governor's mansion...might not be so good for our image...
Our second day in Richmond was more relaxed after a good night's sleep. We toured the White House of the Confederacy, a synagogue built in the 1700's and museum, Richmond's city market (nothing great), and some walking in the historic district. Came home and went out to dinner with our Evergreen hosts...a really nice couple.
Tomorrow, we head for two days of R & R at Virginia Beach. Then, believe it or not, we head home. Hope to send one more update before I get home. If not, I'll update you then. Thanks for staying with me.
Julie
