| $1 = .7 Jordanian Dinars My tour group went from Jerusalem to the Israeli city of Eilat on the Red Sea. We were able to cross into Jordan from Eilat and drive two hours up to Petra. I have always wanted to visit the archaelogical site Petra in the country of Jordan. Petra is an ancient city, built by the Nabataeans between the third century BC and the first century AD, and made rich from the frankincense trade. The buildings of Petra are carved into the red stone hills. It is amazing to see all the building fascades emerge from the hills. Petra was a busy city from its inception through the 12th century, but then it was abandoned and forgotten for 500 years until it was rediscovered in 1812. You might recognize Petra since it was the backdrop for a scene in the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. At the climax of the movie, Harrison Ford found the Holy Grail in the Treasury building. Check out this picture of Harrison Ford and Sean Connery from the movie. Photo: Indiana Jones in Petra |
