Moriguchis on a Dream Adventure travel blog

Today we all went to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. There are 3 floors to this museum and so much to see. Because we only had a limited time to go through the museum, we really had to pick and choose. As I've enjoyed watching "Bones", I've always wondered???is it true that so much can be found out about a person just by examining bones of a dead person. Well, today I discovered that it is true. This was one of my favorite sections,"Forensic Anthropology". It is so interesting to see how "bones" alone can reveal so much about a dead person.

Another interesting gallery was the "geology, gems, & jewelry". This is where the museum's best-known artifact, the 45.52 carat blue "Hope Diamond", the world's largest stone of its kind is on display. It is a beautiful stone. Gene tried to take a picture to post, but the glare on the glass was too much, so he couldn't take a good picture. Suffice it to say that you will never see another stone like it!

Also, on our visit was the "Sant Ocean Hall". There are many fascinating exhibits within the hall, the most prominent is the 45-foot model of a North Atlantic right whale named "Phoenix" and 2 giant squid specimen.

Moving along we went to the "Kenneth E. Behring Family Hall of Mammals". Featured in this hall are 274 masterfully crafted taxidermic specimens, about a dozen fossil casts and several interactive displays. This exhibition tells the story of the evolution of mammals and how they adapted different habitats. Very interesting. ....(carol)
