Yaxchilan Ruins

Continued along the Mexico/Guatemala border. Spent the next several nights in a cabana at Nueva Alianza in the Frontier Corozal, Ocosingo in Chiapas.

The cabanas were fantastic and what a deal at 300 pesos a night for 3 people. They had thatched roofs, a deck with hammocks, table and chairs. The inside was very comfortable with new beds complete with mosquito netting and a spacious bathroom and shower with hot water and...bonus...a toilet seat (yeah!!), which we haven't been getting most places lately. I was afraid the mosquito netting meant there would be mosquitoes, but we never got a bite except for a few sand fleas outside. Heard a howler monkey in the jungle right outside our cabana.

There were beautiful manicured paths leading from the cabana, through the jungle landscape, to the restaurant. Although fully staffed, with great food and service, there was rarely anyone dining in the restaurant except us.

We met a young couple in the lobby that agreed to meet in the morning to take the boat trip to the Yaxchilan Ruins. The more people you can get together to hire a boat, the less it costs....found another couple before we left, which made the cost only 100 pesos per person. Their names were Memo, from Mexico and his girlfriend Cheryl from Vancouver and Enrique and his wife from Merida.

The driver maneuvers the boat with ease down the river that borders Mexico and Guatemala. He points out the border patrol on the banks of Guatemala. The Yaxchilan ruins are surrounded by a beautiful dense jungle...there were bats inside some of the structures...as well as etched tablets on display. Finally saw a howler monkey in a tree nearby. I was surprised to see how small they are for how much noise they make....
