Started our morning at the "Mexico Paris" cafe for breakfast...there are hundreds of cafes in San Cristobal but we've picked this one as our favorite. The first floor art consists of photos of famous people and places of Paris...the second floor has reproductions of Mayan art which were amazing...but our favorite place to have breakfast was on the roof overlooking the city. What a great deal on our breakfast...about $2 for scrambled eggs, refried beans, fried plantain, juice and coffee. The poor waiter had to climb a narrow winding staircase three flights to deliver our breakfast to the roof.
We decided to drive to Canon del Sumidero today. The temperature went from cool to hot and humid when we left the elevation of San Cristobal. We boarded a small boat at the embarcadero El Malecon for $150 pesos. The boat holds about 12 people and takes you on a 2 hour tour of the area...saw a crocodile on the shore (but weeks later we talked to a couple that was on the same tour and they saw the same crocodile in the same place...Hmmmm do you think it might have been fake??? oh well). Saw scavenger birds on one shore, incredible cliffs and caves and different rock formations. After we passed the dam the boat let us out for refreshments at a "designated" shoreline restaurant. Then we piled back in for the return trip....but our boat engine began to fail half way back...so we had to climb aboard another boat, midstream. Before the switch, our guide passed his hat around for donations for his "hard luck"!!!
