We awoke to another beautiful morning in Slovakia, but it was time to head off to the next stop on our trip – Zakopane, Poland. So after another hearty breakfast our next task was to take a succession of local buses to cross over the Polish border. This also meant having yet another semi-argument with another Slovak bus driver who seemed determined to rip us off. But after managing to hold my tongue and settle with a death stare and under the breath mumbling we were off for the 2 hour trip through the Tatra mountains. We arrived in Zakopane just after midday and were just mesmerised by it’s beautiful setting at the base of the snow covered Tatras. It’s reasonably decent sized village with very much a ski town by winter / hiking town by summer vibe about it fully geared up to cater for the year round tourist crowd.

After unsuccessfully trying to interpret a Polish/Russian restaurant menu (how dare they not cater for my language needs!) we happily settled for freshly made pizza from a street vendor and checked out the main part of the town. We then took the ‘funicular’ up the hill at the bottom of the main street to get a better glimpse of the amazing view of our surroundings. We were far from disappointed as when we got the top we were just in awe of the mountains that encircled the town and realised how far from home and our everyday lives we really are.
