After what seemed a long term, the reason we basically chose to Mexico for our year abroad arrived…. SPRING BREAK! We arrived after an extremely long journey from Colima Saturday evening and headed straight out to the nightlife. Our first stop was at the Hooters, if all fails with the teaching then I reckon I could fit in getting a job there! The main strip in Cancun is unlike anywhere else we’ve seen in Mexico, but did not let us down with the Brits Abroad mob from the Thomson package holidays and American jocks taking over the clubs. We even heard a group of blokes on the bus teaching the Mexicans how to sing I’m forever blowing bubbles!
We spent the weekend chilling out on the beach, I couldn’t get over how white the sand and how blue the Caribbean sea is, it’s just like you see on the postcards. The bars and clubs were pretty amazing, open bars in most of them and a slide from the dancefloor in Senor Frogs into the ocean! I managed to get on the mic in Senor Frogs and then couldn’t think of anything witty to say, so instead just started chanting SAY UK, UK. Classic quote of the trip had to come from Fiona though “yeah, well look at me, and look at you”. The best night was definitely going to Cocobongo’s (where a scene from The Mask is filmed). It’s a mixture of a club and a Las Vegas show, with a massive stage with dancers and singers... the whole thing was really spectacular.
We were staying in a hostel in the downtown, but the Hotel Zone was absolutely incredible, just one long avenue lined with five star hotels. There’s even a luxury avenue with all the designer brands for the rich tourists. Everything is priced in dollars for the Americans, and when we asked how much stuff was in pesos, even the Mexicans didn’t know. Unbelievable how the whole town is completely americanised.
Really enjoyed my few days in Cancun but that was definitely enough, and ready to move on to Playa del Carmen.
