We drove over the state line back to Lumpkin, Georgia to visit Providence Canyon State Park. Due to poor farming practices by the early settlers the soft soil began washing away when trees were cleared to plant crops. By 1850, ditches three to five feet deep had been cut into the land. Today some of them are as deep as 150 feet.
Hiking trails circle the rim of the canyon as well as descend to the floor. The Rim Loop affords views into the ditches and the layers of soil. A walk on the canyon floor is through orange Georgia clay.
I spent the late afternoon as a guest of a long time golf buddy, Shelly and his wife Lynne in their beautifully restored and decorated Alabama mansion. The "Cedar Heights Plantation" was originally built in 1837 and through the years has undergone some additions and neglect. Lynne & Shelly have done a magnificent job of restoration and the mansion will undoubtedly be a centerpiece of the "Eufaula Pilgrimage", a showcase of Alabama Mansions.
