On Sunday Connie had contacted a former colleague that she had worked with at CBC about 20 years ago. Carole was born in Texas but had married a Canadian and ended up living in Calgary for several years. After the first major round of lay offs at CBC in 1990, Carole and her new husband Mike moved back to Houston so that Carole could be closer to family. When Carole heard we were in the area, she generously volunteered to tour us through downtown Houston to show us some interesting sights and to have a visit over a delicious Mexican food lunch. We drove past the Houston Astrodome, the new Reliant Centre where the Houston Texans of the NFL play. We also passed the stadium downtown where the Houston Astros play. Carole toured us through the huge medical complex that has multiple hospitals specializing in the various areas of medicine. She toured us through a couple of neighbourhoods where the wealthier people live. We had a great afternoon seeing the sights and for once John got to sit back and relax and let some one else do the driving.
Monday morning was a bright and early start to take the half hour drive into Galveston to catch the tour boat that would take us about 7 miles into the Bay to try our hand at deep sea fishing. This week is spring break in the area so the boat tour was booked up heavier than usual. The staff on board were very helpful supplying the rods and bait we needed but due to the cooler temperatures of the water, the entire boat was skunked and after 4 hours out fishing we came back to the harbour empty handed. Having set our minds to having a fish fry for supper, we ended up stopping at the Fish Market to buy some red snapper fillets. The rest of the afternoon was spent touring the many shops in an area called “The Strand”. We enjoyed our red snapper dinner but could have enjoyed it better, if we had actually caught the fish ourselves.
