Southern Scenic Route ENDS on entry to Te Anau, South Island, NZ

We actually got to know the ins and outs of daily life in Riverton quite well as we spent most of the day doing 'jobs' like getting the van serviced, hair cuts and internet. We found time to do a short coastal loop tramp around the headland overlooking the town - Mores Scenic Reserve with a great hill top look out and more views of Stewart Island.

By 5pm we were finally on our way again and were now heading towards Fiordland..

A short pit stop at McCracken's Rest revealed the spectactular beauty of Te Waewae bay - again quite reminiscent of the Donegal coastline. This area has special significance for the Maori tradition as it was an ancient walking route used for seasonal food gathering. These sites of significance are usually marked and termed A Taonga (Treasure) and visitors are asked to treat them with respect and due care.

We reached Te Anau - the stepping stone town for visiting Milford and Doubtful sounds and got accommodation in one of the Kiwi Holiday Parks - very efficient operations with great cooking and shower facilities all for 16 dollars per night each.
