After our briefing last night we were up at 6am for breakfast to begin our day. They don't hang around here! Unfortunately we were alerted at 6.30 that there had been a major earthquake in Chile and we were not allowed to sail or go anywhere until the president of Ecuador said so. Because of Tsunamis the captain was playing it safe and just waited where we were. We weren't even sure if we could continue our journey as we are in the same seas as Santiago, where the huge earthquake happened. The earthquake killed may people. Having been around that area I imagine that it is the poor people that have very little that are now homeless. It is difficult to know what is going on but does cause me concern. I was only speaking to a guide a couple of days ago about earthquakes and he said that nothing was going to happen whilst I was in South America. Guayaquil had a 5.5 Richter scale earthquake. The earthquake was not expected so noone was prepared. I do wonder whether the churches whose pillars have been made of bamboo have survived. Most of them are 16th Century and will be a loss to such a religous community.
For the rest of the morning I used the binoculars and looked at the birds and the small islands in our view. After lunch we were advised that we could go out on a panga ride, so off we went in pursuit of seal lions. Later we were allowed to land so we went hiking on Santa Cruz Island. There were marine iguanas, lots of birds and fish but there were even more mosquitoes. We could not put on enough cream to protect ourselves! Back on board Kathy and I joined some other Americans and we had a great night.
