This morning I went kayaking for the first time in Champion Islet.First though we went to Post Office Bay where seaman of old used to post their mail in a barrel and hope that the occupants of the next ship were travelling to where their mail was destined. Mostly the occupants were pirates and whalers, so there were no tortoises as they had been eaten. We opened the barrel and went through all the mail The idea is that if you live in the location, you would deliver by hand the mail in the box. I ended up with two notes and cads for France and one for the UK. I have no intention of delivering them by hand as one is in Devon, but I am happy to put a stamp on an envelope. The island is lovely and the kayaking was great. I shared a kayak with one of the guides which was quite handy, although she is not a very good kayaker and did not row properly so it was difficult to match her with my strokes. Still it was different to kayaking on a lake, with the chop of the sea, but also good fun. I also went on the glass bottom boat and saw sharks and turtles and lots of fish. After the boat I went for a walk and saw the flamingos in a lagoon, ducks cormorants and lots of mosquitoes!!!! There is so much life in the Galapagos, with mocking birds and finches everywhere. Back on board I had supper with Kathy and some other Americans and we had a great night.
