Okay- we are both hanging out of the jeep top at this...

Today was the best day of my life! This was our first full day, and after a fairly good sleep (despite the freakin' roosters crowing all night, which PS are everywhere) we were ready to explore! First stop was the town of Hanapepe where we walked across the swinging bridge over Waimea River. Grabbed some snacks, took off the top to the Jeep, and met some locals at the local grocer. Then we began the drive up to the top of Waimea Canyon. It's about 18 miles from the highway to the top, and around mile 9 it started raining. Top back on. We made it to the end of the road bud sadly it was too foggy to see anything! Disappointed, we headed down until we found sun again. LUCKILY it happened at the turnoff to the Waipo'o Falls hike(mile marker 9). We took our first 4WD road to the trailhead and saw the most beautiful canyon I've ever seen. The pictures don't begin to do it justice! We stood for a long time on the red clay overlook and enjoyed the birds and helicopters circling the canyon we had hiked to. The end of the trail led us to a gorgeous waterfall- one we had seen along the drive, had photographed not knowing we'd be hiking it later! I attempted to swim but the water was a bit chilly! Can't even begin to explain how amazing the vegetation and the views of the landscape were. I will never forget it though! After our hike we needed some beach time. So we headed to the end of the drivable part of the west coast. Ventured out onto Polihale beach with the Jeep (which did great). Saw some whales breaching and met some folks from Minnesota. Living the dream, they retired here about 6 months ago. After knockin back some cold ones with them, it was time to pick up some fresh fish--Marlin this time--to BBQ and now we are having some dinner then heading to the resort area to find some nightlife. Not too much though...have to be up by 7am for our first SCUBA trip tomorrow!
