Hiking to Base Camp

Khumbu Icefield, Expedition Base Camp is left of this photo

Today we started at 6 a.m. It's a big day. We hiked along the glacial moraine, up and down and up and down, and finally came around a corner and saw Gorak Shep, our accomodations for the night. This place is really nice compared to Lobuche. We checked in, had lunch, then left for Everest Base Camp.

While hiking we cross paths with many groups over and over, so we're getting to know them (the Peregrine group, the Royal Mountain group, etc.) It took about 2 hours to get to Everest Base Camp. There's "tourist" base camp, and "expedition" base camp. There is a monument at "tourist" base camp for all us tourists to take silly pictures, but it is separated from the expedition base camp. I didn't hike over to the expedition area - it would have taken too much effort, and it was too far.

The Khumbu Icefall is huge and steeper than I thought. I had this impression that they just climb over the Khumbu Icefall which wasn't a steep slope, and then start hiking the snow slope. Not so. The Icefall increases to a very steep slope. It looks really hard to get through.

We went back to Gorak Shep and had dinner. I had no appetite; a combination of having this lousy cold, altitude, and to top it off, the ulcerative colitis is starting to bother me. I had met with my gastroenterologist before this trip and we came up with a plan on how to treat the UC problems. I was taking imodium, now I switched to lomotil. I can't deal with frequent stops for bathroom breaks, because there's not good places to do it, and the toilets suck. They are not western toilets.

Today was a long day and most of us are really tired. Tomorrow there is an optional hike up a hill called Kalla Pattar. It's a sunrise hike that starts at 4 a.m., goes up the hill where there is a good view of Everest. I'm having mixed feelings about doing this hike.
