February 9
Today we decided to check out Pretoria on foot. Maria directed us to a few points of interest and we set out armed with a tourist map. We wandered down streets lined with embassies of many different countries and lots of beautiful streets with nice homes and huge trees. The leaves look like maples but the bark is kind of grey and white and it has a strange fruit. The security on the homes equals that of our jails complete with electric fences and menacing dogs.
We walked through parks and a bird sanctuary and, getting close to our hostel, we were accosted by a man named Daniel who wanted to know if Jesus was our friend and then proceeded to ask us for money to feed his hungry children. We did our best to ignore him without being rude. We'd been told that 99% of the time these guys are con men looking for easy money.
I finally decided to take a look at our flight itinerary and realized our flight leaves a day earlier than I thought! Uh oh. It says Thursday, Feb 11 but the TIME is 00:46. That means Wednesday night! Sooo I changed our tour of the Soweto township and the Apartheid museum to tomorrow. Bummer. I thought we had one more day to relax.
Gotta do some serious packing tonight and figure out what clothes we'll be giving away.
