February 4 - A day at the beach -- Barlovento, Varadero

We have decided to reconsider how much "stuff" we are carrying, since we will do a lot of walking from bus stations to casas particulares. In the heat, our 15 pound bags will feel like 50. So, we spent part of the morning going through everything to see what we can leave behind. A phone call to Edddie and he offers to keep a small day pack at the WestJet office until we arrive at the Blau later this month (yeah WestJet!!). The remainder of our day is quite uneventful ... to the pool ... to the beach ... to the pool ... a long walk along the beach. This is our total relax day.

Dinner at the Mexican Restaurant is quite good and replete with authentic Mexican mariachi music. The highlight is a pottery barbeque, with live coals, brought to our table. It's in the shape of a pig and has a cast iron plate at the top upon which the meat, tomatoes, peppers and potatoes are cooking. The spicing is excellent and the meal delicious. Washed down with wine and we're happy travellers.

This evening is the "Cuban Dance Show" in the theatre. The dancers performances are hugely energetic and we wonder how they are able to keep up the pace for 45 minutes. Costumes change with each number; bright, colourful and skimpy on the female dancers. We are very glad we didn't miss it.

Tomorrow, we will buy our bus ticket to Havana, do laundry (in the bathroom sink) and enjoy the beach. We have tentatively booked a casa particulares which located in Habana Centro, so we will be near everything. We are not sure how long until we update our journal, but will try to post something next Monday. Hasta manana.
