Thursday was a vocational service day. Each Team member had activities specifically planned for them.
Team Leader Jon had asked for no vocational activities for the day so that he could do some administrative things including updating the blog. With the power shut down he was not able to go on the internet. He spent the morning processing some photographs and hanging out with his host Pratap. In the afternoon he joined Jennifer for her vocational activity.
Jennifer visited two high schools. At both of them she talked about the advantage of attending a US community college as a way to receive an excellent but inexpensive education. She pointed out that with an AA degree, it is easier to get into a highly rated BA program than if the student is applying from India.
Patrick visited a company that AT&T outsources the Yellow Pages to. They take the information from the Yellow Pages sales staff and turn it into display adds, and create the page layout. While he was there he saw some pages that were in production for are code 530 (Auburn east to the California/Nevada boarder).
Nichole visited the life insurance department at a bank and was able to compare how life insurance is sold and serviced in India compared to the US.
Jennifer visited an Ayurveda hospital and spent time talking about treatments, and had a massage. She also visited the Tamilnadu Agricultural College’s herbal department and garden.
In the evening we all went to see the Indian Movie, 3 Idiots. The movie was in Hindi, with no subtitles. Our Rotarian hosts translated the gist of the movie for us. Indian movies are long, this one was almost 3 hours, with one intermission.
